This is a line from one of the most popular and recognized Christmas carols. Almost everyone who celebrates Christmas knows about the benefits of being on Santa’s best Christmas gifts list! I certainly did, when I was a young fella, growing up in the country.

In fact, during the weeks leading up to Christmas, I'd go to extremes to make Santa's good list! Oh yes, I'd do all my home work and school work, even do the dishes for my mother, and help my father with outside chores, like carrying in the firewood for another cold winter evening.

I remember one Christmas season, back in the 1950's, when I wanted a new sled for coasting down over the big hill, next to our home. I dreamed nightly about that sled and knew it would be one of the best christmas gifts that I could get for the coming winter. So, I'd think about that gift, while I was doing my chores, and working like heck to stay on Santa's good list!

There's nothing wrong with having your children do chores and so on, so that they earn their gifts. Christmas Gifts that are earned by doing chores, are gifts that are truly appreciated.

Oh yes, consider me old fashioned, if you like, but I remember how much I appreciated that sled at Christmas, and the pride I felt in the knowledge that I did my chores to earn that gift. I was proud that I had played my part in making Christmas a wonderful, joyous experience, in our household.
